Embezzlement

Wednesday by: Doreen

The term “white collar crime” is generally used to define crimes involving characteristics such as cheating or dishonesty. Although there is technically no fixed definition of a white collar crime, there are a number of nonviolent crimes that are typically grouped together and classified as white collar crimes. These types of crimes are usually committed by professionals or entrepreneurs under the guise of legitimate business activity, and usually include the defrauding of individuals or business for gain.

To embezzle means to take another’s money and/or property through the use of abuse of an official job or position of trust. The elements used as evidence to convict a person of embezzlement include a relationship of trust and confidence breached by the specific intent to deprive the other person of his or her money and/or property.

Embezzlement can take many forms, but examples include:

  • an accountant falsifying records and skimming profits
  • a bank teller or other cashier walking home with an extra 20 dollars from his or her drawer
  • a caregiver taking items from the home of an elderly ward
  • and similar situations

If you or a loved one was charged with embezzlement or any other white collar crime, it is essential that you contact a skilled criminal defense attorney available at the law offices of Rizio and Nelson immediately.
