A tragic accident on a California highway has left one man dead and several others seriously injured, according to local law enforcement. The 29-year-old driver of a semi truck was killed in a fatal car accident involving three other vehicles. California police are still investigating the accident as of this writing.
According to police reports, the 31-year-old driver of a pickup truck abruptly swerved into the back of a parked semi truck, careening off across the highway. There she was struck by another vehicle that was itself rear-ended. The ensuing cacophony saw the pickup truck driver seriously injured, though her passengers escaped injury.
The driver of the semi truck sustained major injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead by attending medical personnel. Police say an unknown medical condition caused the man to stop his vehicle in a northbound lane. This has caused the coroner's office to pronounce his cause of death unknown at this time.
Given the details of this fatal car accident have not yet become clear, it is difficult to say who will be found culpable and who will be entitled to compensation. Clearly the medical condition affecting the driver may have contributed to his loss of consciousness, calling into question whether he should have been behind the wheel at all. However, California traffic law clearly outlines the responsibility of drivers to be aware of their surroundings on the road -- and a semi truck stopped in a lane is a rather large target to miss. Should the driver of the Ford be held accountable for the accident, the next-of-kin of the semi truck driver may wish to pursue a wrongful death suit against her.
